KBR Ammonia Technology Selected for Landmark Fertilizer Complex in Saudi Arabia

To meet growing global demand for agricultural fertilizers and enhance industrial production capacity, SABIC Agri-Nutrients (SABIC AN) has selected KBR's industry-leading Purifier technology for a new large-scale grassroots ammonia plant in Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Partnering with EPC contractor Samsung E&A, the facility will achieve an annual production capacity of 1.2 million metric tons of ammonia, playing a pivotal role in boosting SABIC AN's overall urea production from 4.8 million to 7.4 million metric tons per year.

Technical Scope and Innovations
Under the terms of the agreement, KBR will deliver comprehensive technology licensing, basic engineering design, proprietary equipment, and specialized catalyst supply for the single-train facility. Key technical features include:
  • High-Capacity Design: A massive single-train output of 3,500 metric tons per day (MTPD), representing one of the largest ammonia capacity licenses awarded in the Kingdom and KBR's largest in the Middle East and Africa.
  • Purifier Process Efficiency: KBR’s proprietary Purifier configuration is engineered to deliver lower carbon intensity per ton of ammonia produced compared to conventional designs.
  • Smart Operations: Integration potential with advanced digital tools, including KBR INSITE, a physics-enabled AI advisor designed to optimize plant performance, energy efficiency, and emissions management.
Strategic Impact and Economic Alignment
This milestone marks KBR's second major single-train ammonia award of 2026, following a 3,430 MTPD project secured in Latin America earlier in the year. The project strongly supports Saudi Arabia’s industrial diversification and growth targets under Vision 2030 while fortifying the nation's strategic position in global food security.

Furthermore, the initiative highlights broader corporate developments for KBR, which operates as a global lifecycle solutions provider. Following its planned separation, KBR's Mission Technology Solutions business is scheduled to launch as an independent public company named Trinzic in January 2027, boasting over $5 billion in annual revenue and 18,000 employees supporting high-priority national security and global operations missions.
