Large Tractors Introduce Intelligent Powertrain and Digital Automation
CLAAS has launched the AXION 8 CMATIC series with adaptive drivetrain management, advanced automation and digital connectivity for high-performance agricultural operations.

CLAAS has introduced the AXION 8 CMATIC series as the successor to the AXION 800 range, targeting large-scale field, grassland and transport applications. The three-model series combines a redesigned operator environment with intelligent powertrain management, precision agriculture technologies and driver-supervised autonomy to improve productivity, fuel efficiency and machine management.
New tractor series for precision agriculture
The AXION 8 CMATIC range comprises the AXION 8.240 CMATIC, AXION 8.270 CMATIC and AXION 8.290 CMATIC, delivering maximum engine outputs from 240 hp to 290 hp, or up to 313 hp with the DYNAMIC POWER management system. The tractors retain the proven long-wheelbase chassis while introducing a redesigned VISOR front, upgraded electronics, new operator controls and enhanced automation.
Designed for cultivation, tillage, transport and grassland work, the tractors feature rear lift capacities of up to 10,200 kg, a standard front linkage capable of lifting 5,900 kg and a load-sensing hydraulic system delivering either 150 l/min or 205 l/min. All models include a 463-litre fuel tank, a transport speed of 50 km/h and extended maintenance intervals of 750 operating hours.
Intelligent engine management improves efficiency
All models are powered by a 6.7-litre FPT NEF six-cylinder engine producing between 264 hp and 313 hp and up to 1,282 Nm of torque. Peak torque is available across a broad engine speed range, enabling efficient operation under varying field loads.
A key development is the DYNAMIC POWER engine management system, integrated into the CEMOS AUTO POWERTRAIN platform. Instead of continuously operating at maximum output, the system automatically distributes engine power between traction, power take-off functions, hydraulics and auxiliary systems according to real-time demand. Combined with AUTO DROOP, which automatically adjusts engine speed to operating conditions, the system aims to reduce fuel consumption while maintaining productivity.
During idling, engine speed automatically drops to 650 rpm to lower fuel use and operating noise. The engine is also approved for hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), allowing farms using renewable diesel to significantly reduce lifecycle carbon emissions. Serviceability has been improved through extended oil change intervals, longer filter replacement schedules and an optional reversible cooling fan that removes debris from the radiator package during operation.
Predictive transmission adapts to changing workloads
The continuously variable CMATIC transmission has been paired with a redesigned electronic drivetrain management system that automates engine and transmission settings according to operating conditions.
Its most significant feature is AUTO LOAD ANTICIPATION, an adaptive control system recognised with an Agritechnica Silver Innovation Award. Using self-learning algorithms and efficiency maps for the engine, transmission, hydraulics and auxiliary systems, the software predicts sudden increases in load before they occur. For example, when an implement enters the soil, engine speed and transmission ratios are adjusted proactively to maintain traction and minimise fuel consumption without operator intervention.
The transmission also allows seamless switching between forward and reverse travel, pedal mode, joystick mode and PTO mode while maintaining continuous vehicle movement. Transport efficiency is improved by achieving 40 km/h at approximately 1,300 rpm and 50 km/h at 1,400 rpm, reducing engine speed during road travel.
Operator environment focuses on comfort and visibility
The AXION 8 CMATIC features a newly developed four-post cab with an interior volume of approximately three cubic metres. Noise levels have been reduced to a maximum of 67 dB(A), while premium seating options include heating, ventilation and massage functions. The driver's seat rotates up to 40 degrees to improve visibility of mounted implements during field operations.
Three integrated high-resolution cameras provide forward and implement views through the new CEBIS connect interface, while up to 22 LED work lights delivering 56,000 lumens improve visibility during night operations. A redesigned suspension system and optional dynamic steering reduce vibration and steering effort, particularly during repetitive headland manoeuvres.
Digital farming platform supports connected operations
Machine control is centred on the new CEBIS connect terminal, available with one or two 12-inch touchscreens. The interface integrates tractor controls, ISOBUS implement management, GPS guidance, work documentation and precision agriculture functions into a single operating environment.
GPS PILOT supports automated steering, while AUTO CSM automatically executes programmed headland sequences. Reference lines created in CLAAS connect can be transferred between compatible machines, and automatic reference track switching reduces manual intervention during complex field operations.
CLAAS connect extends digital farm management by supporting fleet monitoring, maintenance planning, remote diagnostics, task documentation and application map management. Operational data is synchronised automatically for analysis and documentation, while Remote Display View enables authorised personnel to provide remote operator support when required.
Driver-supervised autonomy expands field automation
The AXION 8 CMATIC is compatible with a Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) that enables driver-supervised autonomous operation. Once a work order has been prepared in CLAAS connect, the tractor can execute field tasks including automated steering, headland management, obstacle avoidance and variable-rate application using prescription maps.
Although the machine performs the programmed operation automatically, the operator remains in the cab and can intervene whenever field conditions require manual control. This approach combines autonomous task execution with continuous human supervision for operational safety and flexibility.
